Should you smile in a LinkedIn Headshot?

Hey friend! Let me guess, you are planning a professional photoshoot and now you’re doing your research to make the most of your photography session. If you are looking for just a quick answer to whether or not you should smile in your LinkedIn headshot, then YES absolutely! If you want to know the BIG WHY, then stick around and read on!

Here’s why you should smile in your LinkedIn profile headshot:

To be honest with you, you don’t have to smile in your LinkedIn profile photo, if (1) you don’t smile normally, or (2) you’re an actor applying to play Stanley Hudson (US Office).

BUT, if you work with people, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of giving your headshot everything you’ve got – a spark in the eyes, enthusiasm, passion, and the biggest smile.

1. A smile makes you look approachable

Imagine meeting someone who’s got a huge frown and don’t seem to be interested in talking to you from the first sight. Would you go to them and start a conversation? It works the SAME way with your LinkedIn headshot – open body language, relaxed facial expression, and an easy smile

2. A genuine smile communicates the REAL you.

Communicating your personality in your professional photo is crucial to build trust. As someone gets to know you better, they trust you more. So let your headshot tell as much as possible about you, and a big genuine smile will only help.

3. A smile radiates warmth and friendliness.

The times are gone when we had to meet someone in person to form a first impression. Now most of our first interactions with others are all done online, and your LinkedIn profile photo IS your first impression.

4. What is a better way to project confidence and ambition, than a glowing smile?

Confidence is the key to an effective, ‘killer’ headshot. When you smile, you show that you own it – your presence, your skill, and your brand.

5. If you are generally a smiley person, let it all out!

Your face, your personality, your smile too  – it’s all part of your brand. This is how potential clients remember you, and later on associate with you. Let your smile shine in your professional LinkedIn photo! Don’t be shy – the bigger the smile, the better!

I know, it’s never easy to force a smile for a photo, especially if you don’t feel like smiling or you are forced to update your headshot by your boss. Let me tell you something, because it is difficult not everyone does it. But those who do, reap the benefits of a smiling LinkedIn headshot (higher engagement, more connections, job offers, etc).
