Behind the Lens: What to Expect from Your Upcoming Photoshoot

You booked your shoot — congratulations! I bet you’re now curious about what to expect on the day of the photoshoot, right? Especially if you’re not the most confident person around a camera. Quite a few of my clients even tell me they hate having their photo taken! Thankfully, I’ve never really had a client who didn’t end up enjoying their photoshoot experience.

How is that possible? Well, I like to think it’s because of my human-first approach to photography.

For me, the most important element of a photoshoot is making sure the person in front of the camera feels relaxed and comfortable. It doesn’t matter how expensive the lens is, or how extravagant the setting might be — if the subject is nervous, that body language will show in the photo.

Most people don’t want a technically perfect photo for their LinkedIn profile picture. What they really want is a photo they feel proud of — something that feels like them, at their best.

If any of the above sounds familiar, then fear not! Here’s what you can expect from a photoshoot with me, Anastasia Jobson.

Step 1: Arrival and briefing

I won’t be pointing the camera at you the moment you walk through the door, so you can relax!

I like to start sessions with a cup of tea or coffee and a quick chat about the visual style you’d like to achieve. This helps me understand your goals for the shoot, while also giving you the chance to realise that I’m not so scary after all.

Step 2: Testing and relaxing

Once we’ve put on your favourite playlist for some background music, we’ll move over to the shooting area.

The first 5–10 minutes are completely pressure-free. We’ll simply test the lighting, backdrop, and angles to see what works best. I’ll also show you the photos on the back of the camera as we go, so we can make adjustments together and figure out the best direction for your shoot.

Step 3: Photoshoot

Once we’ve found a visual style that works, we’ll move into the main photoshoot.

I’ll guide you through a range of natural, flattering poses to create a strong selection of images for you to choose from later. There will be plenty of time for short breaks too — whether that’s reviewing photos, changing outfits, or trying a different backdrop.

Step 4: Debrief

The final step is an easy one!

After the shoot, I’ll create a preview sheet so you can look through all the photos we captured together. Your only task is to choose which ones you’d like edited and kept.

There’s no pressure to decide straight away — you can even get back to me a few days later once you’ve had time to look through them properly.

And of course, another coffee is never a bad idea either.
