10 Awesome Reasons why you should dance more

Dance is good for your Physical Health

1. Get fit while gettin’ jiggy!

Dancing is one of the best workouts, it engages your whole body. Arms, core, legs – when you dance every single muscle activates so you train your body as a whole without neglecting any particular muscle group. Here are more reasons to add dance to your workout routine – Dance as the best workout.

2. Dancing improves your cardio vascular health.

All styles of dance are a great cardio workout as they keep your heart rate high throughout drills and routines.

3. Better coordination and body awareness.

Dancing helps you to understand your body (every muscle and joint) what helps with coordination.

4. Enhance your muscle tone and strength.

Certain dance styles require you to hold uncommon positions and execute movements that you’re not used to in everyday life. For instance in ballet you would be holding your posture and arms extended whilst executing leg movement – you will soon feel your back and arm muscles ache; in hip hop or dancehall you will find yourself squatting most of the time, which will help build leg muscle strength.

Mental Health Benefits of Dance

5. Boost your cognitive efficiency while dancing!

Studies show that physical activity such as dancing improves your ability to think as you become older. As you learn sophisticated dance routines, you activate parts of your brain that are responsible for memory and skills.

6. Dancing is an excellent mental exercise.

Not only your body needs exercise, but brain too! Dancing requires you to focus on the changing patterns of movement and remembering the moves and executing them to the music.

7. Dance is social.

Whether it’s a dance class, or a party – dancing with other people or being surrounded by others is great for your social and emotional health, according to Healthline.com. Additionally, its an awesome way to meet new friends!

8. Enhance your mood.

Because dancing is highly expressive it allows you to release your emotions (especially negative ones) and let go. Similarly to any other form of exercise, it releases endorphins, feel good hormones which reduces stress, diminish anxiety and depression. (My husband does a little dance every Friday – he’s not a dancer but expresses his excitement for the weekend.)

9. Increased self-confidence and self-esteem.

The more you go to dance classes and see yourself in the mirror moving, the more accepting you get of yourself. Further, when your dance skills improve you will see it (and want to show it off on a party) which then leads to a boost of self-esteem.

10. Raised energy levels.

Exercises such as dancing get the blood flowing, which makes you feel more awake and ready for more action. If you ever feel low in energy, play your favourite music and simply start moving!
