How Long Does It Take To Get Ready For a Photoshoot?

Planning a photoshoot can take anywhere from a few days to a few months. I’m a big believer in preparation. The more planning and work can be done beforehand – the smoother and easier the photography session will be for everyone involved. Let’s discuss how long does it take to get ready for a professional headshots and brand photoshoot!

Here’s how Long It Takes To Get Ready For a Photoshoot

Are you planning a personal photoshoot? Make sure to check out a Photoshoot Preparation Checklist with a detailed breakdown of ‘what, when and how’ before your photo session.

Let’s say you’re getting ready for a professional headshot photoshoot

You don’t want to rush this process. Your headshot is essentially your professional image online. The optimal time to prepare to shine during your headshot photography shoot is about 1 week.

Here are the basics of headshot photoshoot preparation:

  • Get your headshot photography session booked.
  • Get yourself booked for a fresh haircut.
  • Plan your outfits.
  • Hit the gym a couple of times before your session- it will make you feel good about yourself as well as give your body a bit of definition.
  • Detox. Cleaner skin for your photoshoot will do wonders, improving your confidence!
  • Get enough sleep (especially the night before).
  • Avoid any food that causes bloating and water retention a day before and on the day of your appointment.

As a rule of thumb, the better you feel about yourself during your photoshoot, the better your images will come out. It’s not a race to get your headshot upgrade; make sure you give yourself enough time to fully prep for your shoot. The results will be worth the wait!

Let’s say you’re planning a brand photoshoot

Let’s start with basics – Personal Branding Photography: What it is and Why it’s Important.

Generally, the more complicated the photoshoot concept is, the more planning it would require. From building a concept and finding a team (makeup artist, hair and fashion stylist), to finding and booking a venue (photo-studio or a specific location), sourcing outfits/accessories/props, it will all consume time. I would recommend setting aside at least 2 weeks to prepare for every aspect of a successful branding photography session.

Here’s a quick branding photoshoot prep checklist:

  • Create a moodboard (colours, outfits, props, venue).
  • Come up with a shot list (have your website in mind and all the photos required for the layout; social media feed. The more detail, the better!). You might also find useful the Brand Photoshoot Shot List Essentials.
  • Find and book makeup/hair, fashion styling.
  • Source outfits.
