How to Prepare for Corporate Headshots

A professional headshot is one of the most important assets you have as a business owner or a freelance professional. A large part of what people think when they hear your name is going to be based on your image alone, which means that each aspect of it needs to shine. Did you know that a successful corporate headshot is a blend of 50% your photographer’s skills and 50% your preparation? In this post we are going to talk about how to prepare for your corporate headshots photo session!

6 top Tips for effective Corporate Headshots:

Dress for the job you want

A big part of getting that perfect look is getting an outfit, which can seem intimidating for those who aren’t used to this level of fashion consciousness. Solid colours are always going to present you in a more professional way. Depending on the nature of your industry, your outfit can vary. Avoid wearing large fashion accessories and pieces of jewellery. Women need to pay more attention to the little details of the outfit while men can go with simpler, yet professional attire.

Shave

If you have a beard, remember to trim. A clean shave is also a good step for a neat headshot look. In case you are not good at doing it yourself, book an appointment with a professional stylist. Razor bumps can be prominent in the final images.

Fix your Hair

Photo-editing can fix most things, though you need to put some effort into styling your hair. I’d highly recommend bringing a hair comb and a couple of hair product with you to your photoshoot. It will take only a moment to fix your hair before the image is taken, in comparison to 15-20 min ‘photoshopping’ something out of the image.

Check your Glasses

If you wear glasses, you need to be extra careful about choosing the right pair. Transition lenses will make your glasses look more like sunglasses. Clean your glasses and try choosing glare-resistant option. Lighting often interferes with the portrait, so I’d recommend having your headshot taken with and without glasses.

Relax and be Confident

In headshots the face is the primary focus of the photo. However we all carry so much tension in our faces – in the forehead, jaw, lips, etc. You facial expression can make or break your photo. For the most effective corporate headshot you want to make sure your face is relaxed – a neutral relaxed face with an easy smile is the most flattering expression.

On the Day of Headshot Photoshoot

Make sure to get enough sleep before your photoshoot. Having dark circles or a fatigued mind is going to impact the final image. Although things can be fixed with Photoshop yet the fresh face is always going to make you stand out.

Here’s a BONUS TIP! Analyse your photos from the past and try to find out points where you need to make improvements. Does a specific colour suit you the most? Do you need to improve your posture while posing? If you have any concerns, speak with your photographer for the guidance and advice.
